Targeted point and click theming in Drupal with the Skinr module

Fri, 09/30/2011 - 7:17pm

The Skinr module gives powerful point and click theming capabilities to site administrators based on predesigned styles.

Fusion UNI ThemeAt the University of Northern Iowa, one of our standard base themes is Fusion UNI, a Fusion subtheme that integrates with the Skinr module to provide predesigned block, node, view and panel display styles set through the Drupal user interface.

The Fusion/Skinr combo allows us to rapidly deploy a default UNI branded theme to a unit on campus while still providing them a level of style flexibility and customization. These styles also follow the university brand guidelines so departments do not have to worry if their styles are using the correct university approved colors.

Using a reusable set of style elements also decreases development time and in turn is cheaper for departments.

Skinr User Interface
Skinr's UI allows for point and click style selection. (With handy mouse-over previews!)

College and universities planning the move to Drupal may also consider creating a college subtheme of the university base theme to include reusable styles just for their college, then utilizing that theme on all of their departmental sites.

Drupal 7 status

At the moment, Fusion is in alpha, while Skinr is still heavily in development because of a large rewrite to make it even more powerful and flexible.

Although we're considering a different approach for the UNI Drupal 7 base them, I'd like to continue using Skinr on Drupal 7 sites and am excited to begin testing the module once it stabilizes.
